Junk
food, yes or no?
By Mary Lau
Introduction
Our parents and teachers always
teach us not to eat too much junk food. Some parents even ban junk food from
home. Is junk food really harmful? What should we eat for snacks?
Junk food such as French fries,
potato chips, sweets and chocolate is bad for us. Eating too much junk food may
harm different systems in our body. We will gain weight if we eat too much
sugary food. Too much salty food is also bad for our urinary system. We might
have kidney stones when we grow up! But most of the people still eat it because
they don’t have time for a full healthy meal. Some people eat it simply because
it tastes good. People may also eat it because they want to share their snacks
with their friends or they feel too bored. Eating a little junk food helps us
relaxed. There is no harm when we only eat a little!
Instead of eating junk food, we
should eat more fruit for snacking. Fruit such as strawberries, grapes and
oranges contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. These nutrients help us build a
stronger army in our body so we won’t get sick easily. They are very important!
However, we should not overeat because there is a lot of sugar in fruit like
durian and grapes. Too much sugar in our diet can cause dental caries and other
unwanted disease.
The government and our school
should teach children (us!) how to pick our snacks. There was a joyful fruit
month and our school gave out different kinds of fruit twice a week. I brought
them home and shared with my family. We were all very happy!
A balanced diet should include
different kinds of food. We shall eat some junk food but never too much. We
should not overeat fruit too. Remember,
too much of anything is always bad!
